Stjáni Skjól (Kristján Skjóldal)

Some History for ya!

Keeper's Note: I met Stjáni at the Suzuki Motorcycles, Iceland dealer (no, I'm not always there! I just happened to be passing!) when he was picking up his black & green, mean machine. He and his girlfriend told me that he was from Akureyri (that's the other side of the island... so, when I met him in town today (16-August-99), and happened to have my camera with me, I just had to let you share it...

Stjáni has removed ALL of the stuff inside his pipes! ALL of it... GONE! His bike makes quite a din... and quite distinguashable... I heard him from around the corner... and knew it was him... He told me, he also DRILLED into the pipe, to get more of it out!

How about some more history, now? He's owned a HOST of motorcyles since he was young, these are, besides all the 50cc ones, 1500Vulcan (89), 650 Savage, 2 Kawasaki ZX10 (one he had a bad accident on... TWICE! Once with his girlfriend.), XJ 900 Yamaha, Honda 550 CB, Honda SL 350... and some more he couldn't remember (or was it me who can't remember... I can't remember!)...

Ingolfstorg, named after Ingolfur Arnason (I should hope)... Thet's the viking guy who came to Iceland first. We, bikers have a little space at the east opening where we can park our bikes... It's like a capital city watering hole... and some cafes around provide the snacks. You can see some of the delinquents have been marking the ground with their tires... I'm glad they put the flowerpot back in the lampost... There was a sort of bet on, the night before... *ahem* Weren't we going to discuss cultural matters here? ... Anyway, below is Stjáni's bike... and above, you can just make out mine to the right... I might as well brag a bit: Cobra freeway bars, Warrior Synthetic Bags... and now, Memphis Fats 19" windshield...

He calls it "CHROME"

Where was I? Oh yeah... The story of Stjáni's bike goes like this: Joi Rćkja (Rćkja is Icelandic for "Shrimp") who is quite a character in the Snails MC (Shrimp now works for the Kawasaki dealer, Steini Tótu, one of the most honest mechanics I know!!!)... Where were we? So much history, I get all muddled up... Ok, Joi says to Stjáni: "The 1500 Suzuki is the most disgusting motorcycle he's seen!"... So that meant Stjáni HAD to see it... If Joi thinks it's disgusting, there must be something good about it!

Anyway, across Iceland he came to check it out... and when he laid eyes on the bike in the showroom he was stunned! In his own words: "It was love at first sight!". He did get a brochure to take home with him... and on the way, he was looking at the bike saying (in English!) "You WILL be mine... You WILL be mine!"

Ok... After this he decided to buy one... and made ANOTHER trip across Iceland to finalise the deal... The dealer said: "I have just the one for you..." and showed him the silver... Stjáni was not having any of it... He wanted the black & green. (I understand him SO well!)... Anyway, so he demanded that poor Kolli (the Suzuki dealer here), get busy clearing his baby from customs... and Stjáni says he has pictures of his bike even when it's still in the CRATE when it arrived... (doesn't this sound like a sonar pic of a womb child?)

... He added, that he had been considering to buy one of the Yamaha Stars... but he got the LC, a meaner bike, plus helmets, leather gear, and everything for the same price! So how could he lose!

Stjáni concluded by saying he's the kind of guy who likes to try out new stuff... and he mentioned that he'd heard some people mentioning his bike was a Harley clone... How can it be a Harley clone when it has none of the Harley problems? ... and despite wanting to try new things, he says he would not like to have one either... "Why step down when you have something better?"

Leave him for a moment...
... and he's back to checking out his prized possession!

Stjáni took his LC to the quart mile track here... and did it in something like 13.9 seconds. Some of the guys at the square were saying a Corvette did it in 13.87 seconds recently.

Stjáni has removed ALL of the insides of his pipes... and even drilled into the pipe for good measure! The sound from his bike is a heavy roar... and he enjoyed letting me hear it as we rode to the airport to pick up his girlfriend... Yes, I'm afraid I dragged out the camera while moving, again! This time we were not going 100 km, like with Dossi, last time... We were only doing about 50 km/h.

Here we are on the road to Reykjavik airport to pick up Stjáni's girlfriend...
It was a fine day for a RIDE...

Stjáni doesn't have an eMail address at this time, and isn't even on the "net".
... but he said he'd check this out at a friend's house.

She came!
